The term “managing up” is often mentioned as a key to success at work—but rarely is it clearly defined or taught. What does it actually mean? How do you do it well? And how do you avoid the unintended consequences that can come from getting it wrong?

In this session, we demystify managing up and turn it into a set of practical, learnable skills. Participants will explore why managing up matters, what it looks like in action, and how to approach it in a way that builds trust, alignment, and effectiveness with their manager.

Through a mix of research-based insights, real-world examples, and guided reflection, participants will:

  • Gain clarity on what managing up is (and what it’s not)

  • Learn actionable strategies to communicate priorities, needs, and feedback effectively

  • Identify common pitfalls and how to navigate them

  • Apply concepts directly to their current role and manager relationship
